WIF GAME RESULTS -- NOVEMBER 12, 2002
INTERLEAGUE PLAY
Hall/Tobin 23, Williams/Simon 20
Hall/Tobin assured themselves of the No. 2 seed in the WIF playoffs next
week, as they came from behind to defeat Williams/Simon 23-20 in the opening game Tuesday
night, a game which featured a WIF record three grand slams. HT pounded away early with
singles, and jumped out to a 6-0 lead. Mike Snyder's home run cut the margin to 6-4 after
one. HT took a 10-4 lead, thanks in part to a three-run blast from Dustin Bonnett. However
Dustin's brother Tyler nailed a grand slam, and Williams/Simon kept it at 10-8. Chad
Jungman's grand slam turned the tide, as Williams/Simon tok a 13-10 lead after three
innings, but back came Hall/Tobin. Dustin's grand slam put his squad up 14-13. In the top
of the fifth, Zach Parsons' two run blast had Hall/Tobin ahead 16-13, but back came WS,
thanks to a three-run blast by Tyler and a 17-16 lead. The game remained in doubt until
the seventh. Down 19-18, HT got a two-run shot from Jared Lindbloom, Tye Johnson doubled
in Danielle Ryan then Lucas Jeanotte homered to finish the deal. Justin Williams homered
to lead off the WS seventh, but that was all they mustered. Kevin Hall was 5-for-5,
including a double, and four runs scored, and Dustin Bonnett was 4-for-4 with two homers
and a double, driving in seven. For the losers, captain Justin Williams was 4-for-4 and
Mike Snyder homered twice.
Kern/Tillman 22, Hight/Friez 15
No. 8 Hight/Friez put up a fight, but Greg Barringer's grand slam and Sara
Tillman's two-run homer capped off a seven-run 6th to finish off Hight/Friez, 22-15.
Barringer started off the scoring with a three-run blast in the first, as KT led 6-0 after
two. The top of the 4th was when KT began to get in trouble. Up 9-0, HF's Shannigan
Heckenlaible led off with a line shot to left. Mikal Kern jumped and the ball skimmed off
his hand and then went over the line for a home run. That kicked off a seven-run
fifth, followed by three more in the fifth, but a three-run shot by Jake Mortenson kept KT
in control until they could pull away in the sixth. Seth Waitman had a career day for KT,
going 4-for-5 with two homers and a double, scoring five times and driving in five.
Barringer homered twice and had 7 RBI, and Tillman and Mortenson each had four hits. HF
was led by Kyle Tobin, who went 5-for-5 with two doubles and three runs scored, and Sam
Shaw had four hits, including a three-run homer.
Anderson/Luers 25, Johnson/Wilbur 21
No one gave Johnson/Wilbur a chance, as the No. 7 team was slaughtered by
Iverson/Flyger one week ago. But with their backs against the wall, they gave top-ranked
undefeated Anderson/Luers all they could handle before finally Pat Anderson's four homers
in as many innings led his team to a 25-21 victory. Anderson/Luers had the bases loaded
with no one out, and had already scored one, when George Summerside's flyball stuck in the
net for an inning ender, the first sign that this night was a long one for AL. Then Joe
Riis' three-run shot started a seven-run first inning for JW, and AL went quietly in the
second. Joseph Kean hit a solo shot, and Kassi Schuetzle hit a two run bomb to give JW a
12-1 lead after two, and the Riggs High Gym was rocking and rolling. In the third
Summerside regained himself with a three-run home run, and Karna Knapp led off the bottom
half with an inning ender, and JW's lead was now 12-5. Captain Pat Anderson began his tear
in the fourth with a two-run blast, and Summerside homered again. Joe Prieksat did hit a
solo shot for JW, and the upset was in the making at 13-8. In the fifth, after Harry
Decker singled in Amanda Hammer, Anderson hit a three-run bomb, and it was 13-12 when the
cinderellas came back. Riis hit a two-run homer, then Devin O'Day hit a three-run shot,
and JW's lead was 19-12 going to the sixth. Anderson/Luers got two runs home, then got to
the top of their order where Chris Mangan hit a three-run homer, Eric Titze had a solo
shot, and Anderson completed the three-peat with another solo blast, and it was 19-18
going to the bottom of the sixth. Joe Prieksat stood at second base with two out when
Tyler Merriam's two-run blast off the white monster looked to spell doom for the
undefeateds, as they had but three outs left. They crawled back though, Summerside reached
base, Geryd Erbele singled, then Amanda Hammer doubled in a run, and Decker did the same.
Chris Mangan's single scored Decker, a 22-21 AL lead. Anderson then stepped up with two on
and hit a shot to left center, 25-21 AL had retaken the lead headed to the bottom of the
7th. Nate Chappelle reached on the only error Titze's made this year, but two pop outs
made it look bleak. O'Day singled, and Knapp came up. Here hard grounder was snared by
Anderson, who touched second for the last out, and an escape. No one has pushed AL to the
limit, as they had never trailed after the second inning all year prior to this game.
Anderson ended the day 5-for-6 with 10 RBI and four homers, both WIF single game records.
Mangan had five hits, and Erbele and Zane Erickson each added four for the winners. JW had
O'Day, Schuetzle and Johnson each post three hits in their losing bid.
Fisher/Fossen 10, Iverson/Flyger 9
Dan Snyder agreed that since IF did not have a girl, that Ashley Iverson
could make her WIF debut one year early. She put on a show, but her brother's team
couldn't quite hang on, falling 10-9 to wrap up the WIF regular season. Sheridan Cronin
and Trevor Fisher exchanged two-run homers in the first, and after two we were still
deadlocked. In the top of the third, Cronin tripled in Shawn Ludemann, then scored on an
error to put IF ahead 4-3. After Brian Pope scored to get FF within 4-3, Chris Iverson's
single scored both Kade Anderson and James Berreth, and IF appeared in control after four
7-3. FF then stepped it up, as Fisher nailed a three-run, two-out bomb to cut the deficit
to 8-6. Then Brian Hylle's home run made it 8-7. To lead off the seventh, Cronin reached
base. Then Jory Drayer's moon shot caught in the net for three outs in the inning ender,
opening the door of opportunity. Needing only one, with one out, Fisher singled and got to
second on an error. Brett Ripley singled him home, then moved to third on Pope's base
knock. William Coolidge then nailed his only hit of the night, a shot just inside the
third base line to score Ripley and give No. 3 Fisher/Fossen a much needed win, ending
their two game losing streak with a 4-2 record. IF's four-game win streak came to an end,
as they ended up the regular year also at 4-2. Fisher and Ripley had three hits for FF,
Anderson and Cronin each had three for IF. Ashley Iverson went 1-for-3 with a single in
her first at bat and two hard hit line outs to left field, one just inches shy of a home
run. She also showed lots of promise as a catcher, and will no doubt thrive next season in
WIF.
