WIF GAME RESULTS -- NOVEMBER 5, 2002
AMERICAN LEAGUE PLAY
Anderson/Luers 23, Fisher/Fossen 10
This game was talked about more than any other game leading up to it.
"The Game of the Century." It turned out to be the letdown of the century, as
Fisher/Fossen compiled just five hits in the first four innings, digging themselves a 15-2
hole they couldn't come out of. Pat Anderson hit a three-run homer in the first, countered
by Trevor Fisher's single, in which he used two errors (the only to AL made all night) to
get his squad on the board. Then in the second, Zane Erickson made WIF history, hitting
the first home run to ever come back. Erickson failed to touch first base on his three-run
knock, officially credited with a 2 RBI out. Eric Titze and Anderson homered in the third,
and the game continued to get uglier. On four occasions, AL got back-to-back homers.
Fisher had a grand slam for his squad, which got seven of its ten runs off of homers. AL
remains undefeated at 5-0, they will be the No. 1 seed in the NL playoffs. FF drops their
second in a row, they are now 3-2. Brian Pope led FF by going 3-for-4, while both Anderson
and Harry Decker were 5-for-6 in the game, Anderson setting a WIF single game record with
nine RBI.
Williams/Simon 17, Hight/Friez 16
Chad Jungman's 7th-inning at bat resulted in a home run. Officially, its
only a single. But the ball left the park, allowing Williams/Simon a 17-16 victory.
Jungman, who was 5-for-6 with 3 RBIs, including a two-run homer, only needed to touch
first to win the game.WS opened up a 12-6 lead, but Hight/Friez clawed back, scoring six
to take a 16-14 lead going to the bottom of the 7th. Singles by Justin Williams, Jordan
Bordewyk, Nathan Paul and Blair Simon, the last two scoring runs, tied the game. Then
Jungman's shot scored Paul to win it. Sam Shaw had a great night for Hight/Friez, who
dropped to 1-4 on the year. Shaw was 5-for-5, with two 2-run home runs, scoring three
times and driving five in.Dustin Hight went 4-for-5 for the losers. For WS, who improved
to 2-3, Paul, Williams and Mike Snyder each had four hits, but Jungman's day led the way
for his squad. Due to the fact that WS lost to Fisher/Fossen earlier on this season, the
pairings for the American League playoffs are set in stone.
NATIONAL LEAGUE PLAY
Iverson/Flyger 43, Johnson/Wilbur 5
No, that's not a misprint. Johnson/Wilbur failed to get on the board until
the bottom of the 5th, at which point they trailed 27-0. JW only had seven players for the
contest, couldn't get any offense or defense. Iverson/Flyger broke numerous individual and
team records in the game, namely having two players hit for the cycle: captain Chris
Iverson and Shawn Ludemann. Every player reached base at least four times, the squad had a
total of 50 hits, 43 runs and 43 RBI, all new WIF game records. The squad hit ten home
runs, a WIF record. They had nine doubles and three triples, also new WIF marks. Kade
Anderson tied Pat Anderson (no relation) with three homers in a game. Kade went 7-for-7,
with three homers and four singles. Ludemann was also 7-for-7 with eight RBI, two homers,
two doubles, and a triple. Iverson and James Berreth each went 6-for-7, Iverson with two
doubles and a triple to go with his homer, while Berreth had two doubles and a grand slam.
IF, ranked No. 2 going in, improve to 4-1 on the year, winning three straight. JW, who
falls to 1-4, had only 12 hits in 32 at bats. Devin O'Day and Tyler Merriam both came in
hitting 1.000, both left that behind. O'Day was 2-for-5, Merriam went 4-for-5, his lone
out a fly out to the wall. The only bright spot for JW was Merriam, who pulled off a Babe
Ruth like feat, calling time, switching to left handed, and hitting a fly ball over the
air ducts in the Riggs Gym.
Hall/Tobin 10, Kern/Tillman 9
It gets wackier every week. Last week, Kern/Tillman upset No. 1
Fisher/Fossen. This week, they lose to Hall/Tobin, but its how they did it thats amazing.
With two outs in the sixth inning, HT trailed 9-1, and had only one home run all year.
Then then hit one in the sixth and three in the final frame, to pull off the unbelivable
come-from-behind victory. KT got on the board quickly, as Allen Goodman led off with a
single, then captain Mikal Kern hit a two-run homer. Jake Mortenson's single scored Seth
Waitman, who had his fourth double in his last five at bats. Jacob Miller's solo home run
in the top of the fourth gave Kern/Tillman a 9-0 lead, and it was blowout city. But KT
then had only three men reach the rest of the game. Hall/Tobin got one in the fifth, then
Kyle Villa's three-run sixth inning shot got his squad within five before the fateful
seventh. Dustin Bonnett led off with a homerun, 9-5. After an out, Tye Johnson singled,
and scored when Lucas Jeanotte got aboard on an error, 9-6. Colin Brown then hit a two-run
home run, 9-8. Karli Larsen singled, but Rachel Zuercher flied out. two down, and Zach
Parsons coming to the plate. Parsons leveled one high up the white monster in left, a
two-run shot that gave his team the improbable win. Waitman was 3-for-4 with a double to
lead Kern/Tillman, along with Kern's 2-for-5 with two- and three-run homers. For
hall/Tobin, Dustin Bonnett was 3-for-3 with two runs and Parsons, Larsen and captain Kevin
Hall each had a pair of hits. Both teams are now 2-3, which means that they are likely to
play each other. Only if they both lose and Johnson/Wilbur win could their be a
tiebreaker, but if only one ties with JW, they have the head-to-head advantage.
